Naj bodo duše Horaca, Pindarja, Anakreonta, Alkeja in drugih Velikih srečne v Eliziju!

The Board for Muted Magnificence in Bass Promotion at the Institute for Bass Studies (BMMBP IBS) hereby announces, to commemorate The Thirtieth day of March, Bass Day, to every inspired soul

A LITERARY COMPETITION FOR A LYRICAL TEXT – AN ODE TO BASSES

The goal of the competition is to select a poet (of any gender) whose lyrics to the Ode to Basses will be set to music and performed by the Bass Choir on a memorable and glorious day at an equally glorious and universally felicitous place.

BMMBP IBS would like to stress that an ode – in Ancient Greek, ᾠδή – is one of the oldest lyrical forms; a structured and elaborate poem, celebrating and extolling an event, individual or a group, affecting the listener on an intellectual as well as an emotional level.

The classical ode consists of three parts – the strophe, the antistrophe, and the epode – but as BMMBP IBS recognizes that the intervening millennia have left a certain mark on poetry, authors are also permitted to create a homostrophic ode or even irregular odes. The Ode should be written in Slovene or English.

General awareness of the fact notwithstanding, the BMMBP IBS would like to take this occasion to yet again recall the Magnificence of Bass Voices, of the Power of the Internal Struggles of the Bass Intellect, guiding the air on its voyage from the Diaphragm to the Vocal Cords, and of the Profundum of the moment in which the Bass resounds – and with it the whole of the Creation. Other fields of Bass Brilliance – which could serve as a lexical hint to the authors – are Beauty; Unsurpassable Popularity with Sopranos and Altos; a Patronizing Attitude to Tenors; Deep Love of the Noble Drop, connected with a Constant Readiness to Party; and of course Intelligence, Courage, Commitment to a Prudent Use of One’s Energy, Dedication and Wit.

BMMBP IBS will appoint a panel of experts which will then select the winning Ode. The selection process will be precise, arbitrary, profound, frivolous, final and correct.

The winning poet will be awarded a special certificate and honorary membership in the Institute for Bass Studies in addition to general glory (worthy of another Ode!), and the honour of their Ode being performed by the voices of the Great Bass Choir. Furthermore, the IBS experts will do everything in their unlimited powers to promote the selected Ode among the Basses of Slovenia and the World, also providing translations of the Ode into other languages (depending on organizational, technical and financial circumstances).

BMMBP IBS and the expert panel retain the right to adequately honour those poets whose Odes are not triumphant, but are nevertheless adequately magnificent.

We invite the inspired ones to send their Odes to institute.for.bass.sciences@gmail.com, with the Subject “Ode to Basses”. The ode should be attached as a word or pdf document.

The deadline is 1 January 2020, 00.00.

The competition is open to all who are worthy. May the souls of Horace, Pindar, Anacreon, Alke and other great ones enjoy the bliss of Elysium.

Basovski dan so leta 1995 razglasili basi APZ Tone Tomšič (Univerza v Ljubljani).

________

* Institute for bass sciences (IBS), established in 1996 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, has a single goal – to use a scientific method to fight against vicious anti-bass memes (fake news) that are usually selfishly spreaded by tenors and conductors, and also some sopranos and even rare altos and is devoted to researching the fact that bass is the superior voice in a choir.  IBS experts are particularly active during Bass holidays which culminate every year on March 30th, Bass day, the celebration of which is the second utmost important goal of IBS.
Bass day was declared by a bass movement group within APZ Tone Tomsic choir (University of Ljubljana), Slovenia in 1995.
